Botox Treatment - Truth and Fiction
Sydney Botulinum treatment (B.tox for short) is now popular in Sydney society in fact it is becoming a beauty routine essential for those in the city.
But I never fail to be amazed by the various urban legends which have developed about the painless procedure.
Below are a few of the errors that we encounter frequently at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a physician.
Fallacy no. 1: B.tox will freeze my expressions!
The human face has around 60 muscles. These ordinarily perform harmoniously, but from persistent movement lines or wrinkles may appear. The overuse of B.tox may result in the face appearing over relaxed. The dose used by most physicians will result in you appearing ‘refreshed’, yet you will still look just as expressive.
Indeed a carefully measured amount of B.tox in the proper place means you should get a reduction in the lines without any reduction in facial expression.
Fallacy no. 2: B.tox is a toxin!
There is a little truth in this. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact pharmaceutical nomenclature. In massive amounts it can relax muscles that you do not want relaxed and may even cause sickness.
However to put everything into perspective - an old pharmacy saying is that ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. All medications in a large enough amount can make you ill. If you drink too much water it will kill you.
Fallacy no. 3: Wrinkle injections hurt!
The needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than your hair. A lot of individuals state that the injections aren’t as painful as getting bitten by mosquitoes. It is definitely not as sore as a procedure like a blood profile.
Fallacy no. 4: B.tox will numb the sensation in my face!
False. B.tox works principally on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on sensate nerves. B.tox just targets the relaxation of muscles.
Fallacy no. 5. You cannot stop having B.tox or else you will age quicker than ever!
This is also untrue.
Botox is thought to be effective for upwards of 3 months. Subsequent injections tend to last longer. The wrinkles will slowly return as the muscle returns to normal. But they will not be more pronounced than when you started your treatment.
Even if you do not have B.tox again - any wrinkles will likely be a little smoother than if you had not undergone the treatment. This, of course is obviously the case due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
