Sydney Botulinum injections (BoTox for short) is now ingrained in Sydney society and now it has become an important part of any beauty routine for those in Sydney. All the same I never fail to be dumbfounded when I hear the stories surrounding the treatment. Here I have included some of the more myths that I come across daily in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a doctor.

Mistake Number 1: I could lose the ability to express emotion!

Research indicates there are around 60 muscles in the human face. The facial muscles normally operate harmoniously, but from continued movement expression lines may begin to appear. If an excess of BoTox is employed the facial muscles may become less expressive. In general doctors use relatively small dosages to are calculated to make you appear ‘refreshed’, but still you will maintain your facial expression.

By injecting the appropriate dosage of the BoTox in precisely the right areas facial expression is maintained whilst the wrinkles undergo a softening effect.

Mistake Number 2: BoTox is toxic!
Actually there is some truth in this argument. Its scientific term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too large a dose may relax muscles that you do not want relaxed and can even cause illness.

But to maintain some perspective: an old pharmacy saying states that ‘everything is poisonous - all depending on the dose’. All medicinal drugs in a large enough dose will make you unwell. Water can be fatal if you drink too much.

Mistake Number 3: BoTox will sting!
Your hairs are thicker than the needles we have at Star Cosmetic Medicine. A lot of patients state that the treatments aren’t worse than being bit by a bug. It for certain is less sore than something like a blood profile.

Mistake Number 4: I might lose sensation in my face!
False. BoTox works primarily on the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. Just the ability to relax your muscles is impacted by BoTox injections.

Mistake Number 5. You can’t stop having BoTox otherwise you may wrinkle faster than ever!
Once Again this is simply false.

One set of injections will be effective for about 3 months. Subsequent injections tend to last longer. The lines will gradually reappear as the muscle returns to normal. But they definitely won’t be any deeper than when you started your BoTox therapy.

In fact the wrinkles should be be softer than if you hadn’t undergone BoTox injections - even if you never continue the treatment. Due to the fact that your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
